“We raise money to help families that have a child struggling with cancer and with that we do a disbursement/grant to those families after we get a report from a social worker, we vet the candidate the family and we give a check for $5,000,” said Kevin Calnan, who serves on the board of directors for Cops for Kids with Cancer.

The check went to help Lucas Solak, a second-grade student at Hoosac Valley Elementary who loves playing with his friends and his twin brother Christopher.

“Lucas loves Peppa Pig, and he loves running around and he loves playing with his friends and he is missing a lot of that right now, but hopefully he will be doing it again soon,” said Jen Solak, Lucas’s mom.

Lucas is 9-years-old and was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in July.

“The treatment for his type of cancer is a 2-year long process. It starts with a really intensive part where they are inpatient and then it moves to different phases, but he will be getting chemotherapy throughout the 2 years, some if it he does at home and some of it he does out there,” Jen said.

The family has to travel to Boston for Lucas’s treatment and says the donation will help.

“This is just so helpful in that it will help cover the cost of gas and getting there and lodging when we need it and it’s just another example of how much our community has come together. We have been so lucky to have so many people supporting Lucas and supporting all of us,” Jen said.

Cops for Kids with Cancer also gave Lucas a gift bag with a stuffed dog named 'Trouble,' a book and some patches. The charitable organization says they have given over $5 million to families in and around New England.
