WORCESTER, Mass. - Today is know "Fat Thursday" in Polish culture and a Worcester bakery has all you need if you celebrate.
In the past week, European Bakery and Pastry has made thousands of paczki. The sweet treat is basically a polish donut and one of the most popular items to eat on the holiday. Even though they may look similar to a donut, they're much harder to make and use a lot more egg.
The bakery said each batch of paczki takes about six hours to make. They're typically served plain, but are offered in much sweeter flavors Thursday to mark the special day.
“Basically the holiday is all about the lent," said bakery production leader Mateusz Surowaniec. "That's the last Thursday of the week before the lent. So, people are just trying to eat as many sweets as they can before Easter, you know, cause they're going to fast."
Surowaniec expects to sell roughly 10,000 paczki this week.
