WORCESTER, Mass. — The Central Massachusetts branch of Habitat for Humanity honored the service of President Jimmy Carter Thursday. The nonprofit says he made countless contributions to the organization, and the homeowners who have been helped for nearly 40 years.
A door was erected inside the Worcester Public Market in honor of Carter, which is meant to be a symbol of the many doors of opportunity the former president made possible through his life of service. The public was welcomed to sign the door and pay tribute to Carter.
"One of the things that really made former President Carter's engagement with us special was that he liked to be a hands-on volunteer," said Debbie Maruca Hoak, CEO of the MetroWest Greater Worcester branch. "He got great joy from grabbing a hammer and putting on a tool belt and building homes alongside families and other volunteers to open the doors for opportunity for safe and affordable shelter."
Hoak says Habitat for Humanity locations across the world hosted similar remembrances Thursday to honor Carter.
