WORCESTER, Mass. - On World Suicide Prevention Day, a walk in Worcester looks to shed light on a very serious issue.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Massachusetts chapter hosted the 'Out of the Darkness' community walk at Polar Park on Sunday. The city's event was one of many held across the country. It's described as a journey of remembrance, hope and support, and is an opportunity to acknowledge the ways suicide and mental health conditions have affected people.

More than 860 participants walked 3.1 miles, which is the same as a 5K.

"So many people who are walking today have lost someone to suicide, or they support somebody who struggles," said Jessica Van Der Stad, who is executive director of the ASFP's Massachusetts branch. "Or, they themselves have struggled. And today is about creating awareness, breaking the stigma against mental health and also really creating a culture that's smart about mental health."

"It's an opportunity for us to one, continue to celebrate the life of a loved one we lost," said walk participant Candy Szymanski. "And to just bring so much needed awareness to mental health and the fact that we need more access to mental health care, treatment centers, so it's a great opportunity to get that message out."

The ASFP has a goal of raising $200,000. Money raised goes towards education, research, resources and advocacy purposes.
