WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester Red Sox will begin the team’s third season in Worcester Friday afternoon at Polar Park, and excitement is building within the organization ahead of Opening Day.

Cameras were invited in for media day Wednesday before players took to the field for a workout. WooSox President Charles Steinberg said there’s nothing like the start of a new season.

“There’s something special about Opening Day, to me it’s a civic holiday,” Steinberg said. “You never know the impression it’s going to make on a nine-year-old, and it’s something a child remembers forever.”

Players said the home crowd has been a bright spot throughout their time at Polar Park, and they look forward to feeling that energy again when they take on the Syracuse Mets on Friday.

“In my short time here, the fans are awesome,” said pitcher Brandon Walter. “More than anywhere I’ve seen in minor league baseball, they make an impact on the game, they give us energy and it’s always a good time.”

“They give you all their support, we just give the energy every day and win games, that’s important,” said catcher Oscar Rangel.

The WooSox also highlighted some new food offerings for the 2023 season, including New England lobster rolls, New England clam chowder and tacos. In total, there will be 100 different menu items at the park this season.

Pre-game ceremonies will begin at 3:15 p.m. Friday, while first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
