WORCESTER, Mass. - The Boston Red Sox celebrated "Truck Day" Friday as they get ready to travel to Fort Myers, Florida for spring training, and their equipment truck made a stop at Polar Park in Worcester.
The team's clubhouse staff loaded up the truck Friday morning to make the journey south to the team's spring training home. For the 25th straight year, Milford native Al Hartz is driving the 53-foot truck, which is carrying an assortment of baseball equipment and supplies. Hartz said Friday was his first visit to Polar Park with the truck.
"Well, I was always stopping down in Pawtucket the last couple of years," Hartz said. "I came down here a couple of days early. I hadn't been to the ballpark and I had to see where I could fit a big truck down here. I wanted to see the route in and take a look around. People will drive by, they'll see the truck, they'll be taking pictures, tooting the horn and waving at me and stuff. It's nice."
Hartz was also given some treats like Coney Island hot dogs, Table Talk pies and Polar beverages. WooSox mascots and fans gave the truck a send-off as it embarks on the nearly 1,500 mile trip to JetBlue Park.
