CHICOPEE, Mass. - Democrat Shirley Arriaga is the winner in the race for the 8th Hampden state House of Representatives seat. She defeated unenrolled candidate Sean Goonan.

Arriaga was endorsed by outgoing 8th Hampden state Rep. Joe Wagner (D) during the Democratic primary election after he chose to retire after serving in the House for over 3 decades. Arriaga said she's grateful for Wagner's support and her first goal as state representative will be create affordable energy options this winter.

"Hard work does pay off, you hear that time and time again," Arriaga said following her victory Tuesday night. "But when it actually comes to fruition, the feeling is, it can leave you at a loss for words. I am humbled. I'm honored. I'm excited. I'm thrilled and I'm truly blessed to have the support of my community, and most importantly, my family."

Arriaga is the first woman, and first woman of color, to hold the 8th Hampden District seat.
