WORCESTER, Masss. - A $1 million grant will go towards ongoing cyber security research at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito announced Tuesday, WPI will use the money on a high tech microscope which can detect if microchips in computers are counterfeit or if they've been tampered with.

WPI President Laurie Leshin said the hands on research done at WPI will help students and the community as a whole.

“We can train students with cutting edge skills that they’re going to be able to use to advance their own careers," Leshin said. "But it’s also really helping all of us, our power grid, our health care system, transportation system, not to mention all the things in our houses are vulnerable these days and we need to make sure we’re working on the latest cutting edge cybersecurity technology."

The money is from the Commonwealth’s Collaborative Research and Development Matching grant program.
