Winter has been hibernating this January. Yes, it was bitterly cold in late December last year, but that didn't last long.

The start of this year has felt like a 'blow torch' with many days in the 50s and 60s.

What You Need To Know

  • Almost every day has been above average this month

  • Many areas have seen their top 10 warmest starts to January on record

  • The 50s and 60s have been common this month

  • Only 2 to 3 days have been below average

You probably haven't needed to lug the heavy winter jacket this month. There have been more days in the 50s and 60s than the 30s and 40s.

Louisville has felt high temperatures above average for 15 days this month. The same story is true in Bowling Green and Lexington.

Most areas have now reached the top 10 list on the warmest starts to January on record. Records go back to the 1800s. With the warmer temperatures, we've also seen our fair share of severe storms.

Here's a look at the warmest starts to January on record for select locations in Kentucky.

Louisville

Lexington

Bowling Green

Looking ahead, temperatures will likely turn cooler for the second half of January, so it doesn't look like we will make it on the top 5 list as of now.
