The dog days of summer didn't really live up to its name in August with only a handful of 90 degree days for the month.
Typically, August is one of the hottest months in Kentucky, with the average highs in the upper 80s to around 90. The beginning of the month started that way, but most of the month was spent in the 80s for high temperatures.
Even with limited 90 degree days, temperatures for the month ended up near or slightly above average. You can thank the warm and muggy nights for that.
This is how many 90 degree days Kentucky had in August this year compared to an average year.
Now, the average is typically a little more than that with Louisville, in any given year, having 13 days at or above 90. Bowling Green saw a typical year, though with 15 90 degree days this August.
For the year, Bowling Green and Louisville usually rack up at least 40 days above that 90 degree mark. Meanwhile, Covington and the Lexington area see nearly half that amount.
So far this year, there have been plenty of days in the 90s with Louisville and Bowling Green seeing the most. Louisville, Bowling Green and Lexington have already exceeded their annual average of 90 degree days.
The beginning of September looks like we will see a few more 90 degree days, so that number will probably continue to climb.
