Many folks are itching to plant spring flowers after our recent stretch of nice weather!
With temperatures soaring into the 70s over the last week, many are eager to plant flowers, especially with all the gorgeous trees in bloom.
But March is our most temperamental month, featuring lots of temperature swings.
The average date of the last freeze happens in April for most. The western half of the state typically warms up sooner, with the average last freeze happening during the first half of the month. It's a little later toward the second half of the month for eastern Kentucky.
Regardless, I typically advise folks to wait until after Mother's Day to plant flowers outside.
Even though the average date of last freeze happens in April, it's still possible to drop below freezing in May. Look at the latest freeze on record across the state. Everyone had their latest freeze happen in May. So, it's still possible!
In fact, temperatures will drop quickly by the end of this week heading into this weekend. Lows will drop into the 20s and low 30s. Despite the urge to get things planted in your garden, it's a good idea to hold off for now.
