Wayside Christian Mission is one location that is preparing for more people this weekend. They’re adding more beds.

“It has been a little bit higher earlier in the week, and I expect this weekend, with the extreme weather coming in, that it will be a little bit higher than that,” said Nina Moseley, CEO of the nonprofit.

Moseley said on Thursday they took in an additional 104 people in the shelter.

“We have extra beddings and linens, and we’ve put extra bunk beds in so that we can take as many folks as want to come in,” Moseley said.

Moseley said that this round of Operation White Flag is more challenging because it’s been non-stop cold weather.

“The folks we have in this time on White Flag are more difficult than normal. And what we have are a lot of people that are used to staying out in camps or whatever. But now, due to the extreme weather, the length of the extreme weather, everything outside is wet. You really can’t camp right now. And so everyone has had to come in. They’ve been in for a week so far, and that’s a little bit rough on people that are used to staying out,” Moseley said.

Moseley said on a normal night they can house 500, but right now, they’ve added makeshift beds holding up 640 people at this campus.

“I do expect more people to come in as it’s snowing again. We’re supposed to be in a winter storm. This is supposed to last for a bit and then, going into next week, we’ve even seen predicted temperatures as low as two degrees. So I do expect people who normally refuse to come in to be in the shelters this weekend,” Moseley said.

Louisville Metro’s Homeless Services Division said they’ve updated their hours and locations for warming centers.
