LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville Football team is playing in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals are taking on the Huskies from the University of Washington for the first time.
One bar in Louisville is expecting a full house.
Typically, Shenanigans Irish Grille is closed on Tuesdays, but Dec. 31 is special.
“Of course we’re gonna be open for the game, gonna be really busy. I assume full tables, full bar, possibly only standing room,” said Kaley Hyatt, general manager at Shenanigans.
The bar is tucked away in the Highland’s neighborhood and for the last three years Hyatt has been bartending.
“I love it here. It’s like a little neighborhood bar, tons of regulars, tons of out-of-towners, random people coming in, great customer base, fun staff. It’s a great place,” she said.
The bar has sports memorabilia of all kinds, but the cardinals are hard to miss.
“Definitely have more UofL fans than UK fans … there’s a game on like for example, when the girls were playing volleyball in the tournament recently, it was packed in here and everybody was screaming, you know, the cards chants and everybody’s up and excited for the game and having a good time,” Hyatt said.
This is the first time Louisville is meeting Washington, and the Cards will be without a handful of key players who opted out.
“We have multiple other players that are looking forward for their opportunity. They’ll get it this game. We’ll be able to see more action on the field. I think once, just like the quarterback position, you know, those guys have worked hard and and they want to go out there and prove that they can play at a high level,” said Jeff Brohm, Head Coach of UofL Football.
Either way, the general manager is predicting a Cardinals victory.
“I’m just going to say we’re going to win,” Hyatt said.
The Sun Bowl kicks off at 2 p.m. on CBS.
This is Louisville’s first time playing in the Sun Bowl since the school’s first-ever bowl game in 1958.
