The University of Kentucky (UK) Board of Trustees approved facility enhancements to Kroger Field, which include improved lighting and ribbon video boards.

According to UK Athletics, the LED lighting system will have the ability to do light shows during breaks in the action, similar to games at Rupp Arena and Kentucky Proud Park. The department added the ribbon boards have greater functionality and sharper video resolution than the previous set installed in 2011.

Upgrades are expected to be complete before the 2024 season, UK Athletics said. They come after recent renovations, which included new video boards for the 2022 season and a new playing surface for 2023.

UK Athletics said the project will be privately funded and was approved by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2022. Kroger Field previously underwent a $126 million renovation in 2015, which saw the stadium get a new press box, club seats, suites, concourses, bathrooms and other upgrades while setting capacity around 61,000.

Originally called Commonwealth Stadium, Kroger Field was constructed in 1973.

"We're excited to begin this project to enhance the fan experience in Kroger Field," said UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart. "Our fans have supported the Wildcats so well over the years, and we look forward to bringing a modern and technologically advanced lighting and ribbon board system to Kroger Field. These improvements will level up the game-day environment and help our fans continue to create great energy in our stadium."

The department said the Board of Trustees also approved gifts of $10 million from Larry T. Gibson, $8 million from Joe and Ambassador Kelly Craft and $1 million from Jim and Sheila Master, whose previously announced donation will be split evenly between UK Athletics and the UK Gatton College of Business and Economics.
