Jones spent 24 years on head coach Denny Crum's staff from 1973 to 1996, joining the program one year after his arrival. He helped guide the Cardinals to five Final Four appearances, including national championships in 1980 and 1986. Jones later served as a university relations assistant from 1996 to 2001.

In addition to the Cardinals, Jones served on Crum's staff as an assistant coach for the 1987 USA Pan American Games team. He was inducted into the university's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.

Jones also served as chairman of the Assistant Basketball Coaches Committee of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
