LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Twenty horses will break from the gate on the first Saturday in May for the 149th Kentucky Derby. Atop each colt will be a jockey, a crucial role in capturing the most famous title in horse racing.

Among the 11 winningest jockeys in Kentucky Derby history, four are still active and tied with three wins apiece—but all four are vying to reach the top three all-time this Saturday.

Here's a look at the winningest jockeys in the 149-year history of the Run for the Roses, from BetKentucky.com:

Eight jockeys are tied with three victories all-time, one behind the great Bill Shoemaker, who sits alone in third place with four (1955, 1959, 1965, 1969).

The four active jockeys tied at three victories are:

  • Calvin Borel (2007, 2009, 2010)
  • Kent Desormeaux (1998, 2000, 2008)
  • Victor Espinoza (2002, 2014, 2015)
  • John R. Velazquez (2011, 2017, 2020)

Velazquez, known by many as "Johnny V," is the only one confirmed to mount a Derby contender at the moment. He'll be atop trainer Tim Yakteen's Reincarnate. The others would need scratches to get into the field of 20.

The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby will be held Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Churchill Downs.
