LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In a letter sent to families, Jefferson County Public Schools said students who left six magnet schools before or during the 2024-25 school year because of a lack of district-provided bus transportation will be able to return to those schools for the 2025-26 school year.

What You Need To Know

  • JCPS students affected by last year's bus transportation cuts can reenroll in their former magnet schools for the 2025-26 school year

  • The Jefferson County Board of Education voted on a plan Jan. 28 to reinstate service for almost 3,000 students at certain magnet schools

  • Families should let the district know by April 10 if their student plans to remain at their current school or return to their magnet school

  • Those who do not respond after April 10 will have their child remain at their current school

At a Jan. 28 board meeting, the Jefferson County Board of Education voted on a plan to reinstate service for almost 3,000 students at certain magnet schools, which began March 17. All students at Coleridge-Taylor Elementary, Whitney Young Elementary and Johnson Traditional Middle School, as well as students who qualify for free and reduced lunch at Butler Traditional School, duPont Manual High School and Louisville Male High School, are now eligible for JCPS transportation.

The board previously voted in April 2024 to cut transportation to magnet and traditional schools.

Families should let the district know by April 10 if their student plans to remain at their current school or return to their magnet school, JCPS said. Those who do not respond after April 10 will have their child remain at their current school and will not have the option to reenroll in their previous magnet school.

JCPS said families can make their choice by visiting the JCPS Transportation Portal, then clicking the Login Parent/Guardian Using Phone Number/Email option. They will need to enter the information and agree to the terms and conditions requested, then select "remain at current school" or "return to previously enrolled magnet."

Parents will be able to request a bus stop for their child once the process opens for the entire district, JCPS added.
