Publix supermarket staff have been preparing for the opening of the second Kentucky supermarket for the past month.

Hannah Herring, a media relations manager with Publix for over 15 years, said it takes critical steps to get to a grand opening date.

“We’ve been in Kentucky for over a year and a half now, working with our community partners and our community food banks to make sure that we’re helping our neighbors in need and just trying to find out where we fit in and where the greatest need is,” said Herring.

Publix is an almost 100-year-old employee-owned business known for its many fresh food items available daily, from “pub subs,” deli meats, and produce, to its fresh ice cream or breads and desserts at the bakery.

“We’ve got a fresh produce department, meat and seafood. Our seafood is fresh, never frozen, and always available within a few days of being caught,” Herring shared.

With Masterson Station and the Highlands close by, the new Publix is a welcome addition; the nearest other grocery store is down Leestown Road.

“So it will be close to where my wife and I live. And so make it a bit easier for shopping. But also, I’m impressed with the people I’ve met so far and just have a variety of food offerings. I think it’s just really great and I think the community is going to be blessed by the presence of this store. And I guess the second one is coming soon,” said Pastor Richard Gaines of Consolidated Baptist Church.

This store is on Citation Boulevard, and a second Lexington Publix will open on Harrodsburg Road.

Publix also has its drive-through pharmacy and liquor store.

Publix informed city officials that they want to strengthen community engagement and announced that their foundation donated 170,000 pounds of produce to God’s Pantry Food Bank in the past year.

“We’re really in the people business. We just happen to sell groceries. And our customers and our associates mean the world to us. Our associates are our greatest asset. They come in every day with a smile on their face and servants are ready to serve our community,” Herring said.

Publix has donated $11 million to over 300 food banks, including God’s Pantry. Publix operates almost 1,400 stores in eight states.
