LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Derby Festival fans can expect a double dose of racing.
The festival is adding a 5K race to its event lineup. It will take place Friday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in Louisville, preceding the traditional miniMarathon and marathon, set for Saturday, April 26.
Registration for the inaugural 5K opens Thursday, Jan. 9 at 9 a.m. at DerbyFestivalMarathon.com.
“The Kentucky Derby Festival 5K will offer a unique experience race weekend with an evening run over the Ohio River just before sunset,” said Chris Martini, Kentucky Derby Festival race director. “Festival fans and families at all fitness levels can participate. It’s also an opportunity for runners to get a warm-up in ahead of their half or full the next day.”
The festival said the 5K is open to runners 10 and up. Runners who complete both the 5K race and the miniMarathon or marathon will receive a "special, one-of-a-kind Challenge Medal to commemorate their experience," organizers added.
Runners can expect a looped course that starts and finishes at Harbor Lawn in Waterfront Park, along with a lap on the Big Four Bridge, which connects downtown Louisville to Jeffersonville, Indiana. Registration is $45, and all 5K participants will receive a medal and shirt, organizers said.
The 2025 Derby Festival kicks off Saturday, April 12, with Thunder Over Louisville. 2025 marks the 70th year of the Derby Festival, which will feature more than 70 events leading up to Kentucky Derby 151, set for Saturday, May 3.
