What You Need To Know

  • The Rhythm Rescue Fund Benefit took place on Sunday, with more than 80 bands performing at 10 venues across Louisville, New Albany and Morehead to raise money for hurricane victims

  • The idea for the benefit started with a Facebook post and the event was put together in 10 days

  • There are plans to hold more benefits in the near future

The idea for the Rhythm Rescue Fund Benefit was born out of a Facebook post by Trevor Johnston on a local musician page.

“Within 24 hours I had 36 bands and two venues that wanted to be on board and then in another 24 hours I think it was up to 60 bands and more venues at that point,” Johnston said.

In just 10 days, organizers were able to put everything together thanks to their dedication toward the cause and the community coming together.

“Seeing the response of the people coming out in such a rainy day, a gloomy day… it’s phenomenal,” said Matt Mercurio, one of the organizers of the benefit. “It warms my heart.”

The Ian Abel Band came to Louisville from Nashville to participate in the Rhythm Rescue Fund Benefit.

“Any way I can help, because we’ve got a fanbase here so this would be a great way to get people to come out on a Sunday and come to a show and hopefully raise quite a bit of money to help those that need it,” said Ian Abel, the lead singer and guitarist of the band.

With many people still in need of help in areas impacted, fundraisers like this are still essential.

“All the money that is raised is going through Community Foundation of Louisville and it will be dispersed to Tampa Bay-Pinellas County community and Asheville, North Carolina community,” said Elaine Hertweck, another organizer.

The organizers involved with this benefit are planning on turning the Rhythm Rescue Fund into a nonprofit. There are plans to hold more benefits like this in the near future.
