LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Volunteers with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth are driving into Election Day with free rides to the ballot box.

What You Need To Know

  • Kentuckians for the Commonwealth is driving people in need to the polls

  • The organization is offering rides from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5

  • The Transit Authority of River City and Lextran are also offering free rides

“No matter what (you) may be going through, let me help you if you need a ride to vote,” said Kenny Jenkins, "democracy champion" with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth.

Last year, Jenkins couldn’t get to the ballot box because he was having car trouble. But KFTC came to the rescue.

“I thought I had a vehicle; I didn't, and it was just a lot going on that could have discouraged me ... ‘Forget it; I don't want to vote ... I’m done,'" Jenkins said. "KFTC was a support system that I relied on, and I’m so glad."

Jenkins is now giving back and spending Election Day 2024 driving Lexington voters to the polls. It's a full-circle moment.

“It is so empowering because this is all a part of the grand scheme of things," he said. "To be a part of a community that is thriving, that is helpful, that is encouraging and supportive."

Tayna Fogle, lead organizer with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, said it's important no Kentuckian is left behind.

“People are living below the poverty line and they don't have transportation," Fogle said. "Some folks have mobility issues, so it's important for Kentuckians, for this commonwealth, to show up like we do every year."

That also means spending time with seniors like Elaine Marshall to assist them to their ballot.

“That is a great help because they get to help us across the street, up to the place and they are just great people,” Marshall said.

Jenkins said voting is extra important this year because it's one of the first times he can cast his ballot after getting his felony expunged.

“It felt really good, to be quite honest, to be able to do my civic duty and to participate in the democracy and the (democratic) process of our country,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins added he'll spend about three hours helping people perform their civic duty.

Kentuckians for the Commonwealth will be offering rides during Tuesday's polling hours, which are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Requests can be made online

The Transit Authority of River City and Lextran are also offering free rides to the polls.
