The monument celebrates health care workers that dedicated their lives to helping people of color. The men and women being memorialized are credited with saving countless lives and offering services to communities. Historians say their work was the difference between life and death for many people.

“The future looks bright; the future looks promising,” said Corenza Townsend, Norton West Louisville Hospital’s chief administrative officer.

The monument was unveiled ahead of Norton West Louisville Hospital's opening in November.

Townsend said, “There’s a lot of people who said that this wouldn’t come to fruition, and that we wouldn’t make it this far.”

This will be the first hospital west on Ninth Street in 150 years.

“This is the heartbeat of our community right now, so I’m excited for everybody to be here,” Townsend said.

The monument is on the corner of 28th Street and Garland Avenue and is surrounded by bricks that were purchased by those interested in providing support to the hospital and this project. In addition to a monument, stories have been shared online.
