LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Construction of the Norton West Louisville Hospital near S. 28th St. and Broadway is nearly complete.
Corenza Townsend, chief administrative officer of Norton West Louisville Hospital, approached Norton leadership five years ago about developing a hospital for West End residents. The hospital will offer primary care, women’s services, orthopedics, pediatrics and more.
“The most important thing is it’s in the community, so people can get that health care here," she said.
Louisville's West End has been without a full-scale hospital for 150 years. Norton Healthcare President Russell Cox said he hopes the hospital rectifies a disparity in access that has burdened West End neighborhoods.
The life expectancy of a West End resident is 12 years shorter than residents of Louisville's eastern ZIP codes, Cox said.
“Our desire is this community looks back and says we turned a corner on those abysmal statistics when Norton Healthcare permanently set that hospital at 28th and Broadway,” Cox said.
Patient and waiting rooms and clinical areas are mostly finished. What administrators described as a "state-of-the-art medical center" will offer many wraparound services.
"It can't open soon enough," Cox said.
The hospital is expected to open before the end of 2024.
