Nell’s Barbershop partnered with Ryle High School to offer free haircuts to students, helping them look and feel their best for the big night. Owner Darnell Bonner, along with his team of barbers, spent a few hours giving dozens of students a fresh look just in time for the dance Saturday night.

As the clippers buzzed and conversations filled the room, Bonner shared the importance of a great haircut. “You look good, you feel good,” Bonner said. “That’s a slogan we’ve all heard, and I believe there’s truth to it.”

For Ryle senior Elijah Laurent, the old saying couldn’t be more true.

According to the National Library of Medicine, barbershops provide a unique space for people to connect, build confidence, and engage in open conversations.

Principal Matt Shafer has seen the positive effects of this firsthand. He said, “You know, for kids to come tomorrow to homecoming, it’s always a great day. We’ll have about 1,600 kids walk through our gym for homecoming. And just to see them dressed up and have some pride in themselves, which is what we’re trying to do here.”

Laurent said the haircut gives him confidence both on and off the field. As Bonner looked around, he says he’s proud to come out and help the community. “It was a good opportunity to kind of get back in the community and help everybody out.”

As Laurent received the final touches on his cut, his excitement was clear. “I just hope my date is impressed when she sees me,” he said with a smile.

With fresh line-ups and renewed confidence, Ryle High School students are now ready to walk into homecoming feeling their best.

This is Nell’s Barbershop’s first time partnering with the school, but Bonner hopes to continue working with the community in the future.
