LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville woman, inspired by her love of reading, wants to make books available for everyone in her community.
She's now teaming up with a Metro councilwoman to make that happen in southwest Louisville.
Kristen Kidwell has always had a passion for reading, especially as a teen and now as an adult. She said books can transport readers to another place.
“Your imagination can kind of run away with you, more so than watching a movie," Kidwell said. "But in the book, it's all in your head, and you can kind of make it whatever you want to be.”
Now, she’ll be hosting a Little Library on her property, where people can freely take or leave books.
“They can just run down here and see what's in there and take something out, put something in and just share adventures with the community," Kidwell said.
Metro Councilwoman Cindi Fowler, D-District 14, said the initiative is designed to spark interest in readers of all ages, and the mini libraries are a way to share and recycle books within the community.
“I think in this day and age, a lot of people don't connect," Fowler said. "This gives an opportunity for neighbors to connect and just the love of reading, we just need to really promote that for adults and children alike.”
Kidwell said she can’t wait to offer some of her own books to share with others.
“I want to put some books in there," Kidwell said. "I actually have some children's books that were mine, so I'm going to put some in there and just kind of see what people put in there and take out."
The District 14 office has purchased 30 Little Library kits for residents to put on their own properties and said 16 kits are still available.
