BERKELEY, CALIF. — The University of Louisville men’s soccer team took Cal to a 3-3 draw in a wild match on the road Thursday night.
The six total goals in the match made it the highest scoring contest of the season for the Cardinals, while their three scores matched their top goal total in 2024. Louisville (4-3-3, 0-2-3) has now earned consecutive road draws in Atlantic Coast Conference play after a 1-1 tie at Boston on Sunday.
Senior forward Gage Guerra snagged the first two goals in just over a two-minute span. The first one came in the 20th minute when Michael Lee sent a deflected cross into the box toward the back post. Guerra took the cross off the volley and hammered it home with his left foot as he fell to the ground.
Guerra struck again two minutes later, dribbling his way past two defenders before taking a shot from the edge of the box. His shot was misplayed by the Cal keeper to make it 2-0 Louisville.
The goals were Guerra’s fourth and fifth of the season, and his second straight match finding the back of the net. It was also his first multi-goal match of the season and his third in a Louisville uniform.
Cal (3-5-2, 0-3-2) answered three minutes later, putting its first goal home to cut Louisville’s lead in half. The score would hold at 2-1 to halftime.
The Cards struck again in the 60th minute when another attack from Guerra was deflected by the keeper, but bounced right to TJ Kahoalii in front of the goal and the freshman tapped it in for his first collegiate goal.
The Bears came clawing back 65 seconds later to bring them with one. Cal went down a man in the 69th man after a second yellow card, but Louisville played with advantage for only four minutes. Guerra’s match came to an end in the 73rd minute after he got a red card for a foul. The remaining 17 minutes of the match were played with 10 men apiece.
Cal found the match-tying goal in the 74th minute, striking from the edge of the box to even the score.
The only shot over the final 15 minutes belonged to Ethan Subachan, but it was kept out of the net with a strong play from a tight angle.
Louisville was outshot 14-7 on the day but had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Cards return home for four straight matches, the first coming Tuesday night against Lipscomb at 7 p.m. ET.
