LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Sherman Minton Renewal project announced it expects work on the Sherman Minton Bridge to be completed this fall, with all lanes open during daytime hours by mid-Nov. 2024.
The team announced the last main component of construction, the hanger cable replacement, is nearly finished and some incidental construction work remains.
It said the nine-day directional closure in August was the final long-term closure of the project. Lane closures will continue until the project is finished, but the longest closures are over. One more short-term directional closure is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13, and will allow for the safe removal of the painter’s platform above the lower deck. It will affect eastbound traffic only. Additional overnight ramp closures at the Interstate 265 interchanges with I-65 and I-64 will also be necessary starting on or after Sept. 23. That work will restore ramps striping to its permit configuration, pending weather.
Hanger cable replacement is a significant undertaking for the bridge, with crews replacing a total of 136 cables. To date, 116 of the 136 cables have been replaced.
“Once the hanger cable replacement is complete, the work that remains is similar to punch list items for a home renovation project,” said Danny Corbin, Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) project manager. “It is important and necessary work, but represents smaller components of rehabilitating a complex, uniquely designed structure like the Sherman Minton Bridge.”
The work for the next several weeks will focus on incidental construction work to complete the fifth and final phase of the project.
“We appreciate the public’s continued patience as contract crews work to wrap up the final construction activities of the project. The Sherman Minton Renewal will add up to 30 years of life to this vital community connector,” said Corbin.
The Sherman Minton Renewal project is a multi-phase rehabilitation project to the 61-year-old bridge. The first construction phase began in 2021.
