LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The 120th Kentucky State Fair is in full swing.
“We come every year," said longtime attendee Janice Kaelin, who attended the Aug. 15 opening day with her husband, Woody Kaelin. "It's always fun to come out and see the animals."
The Kaelins used to bring their children, and now they bring their granddaughter, Sophia.
“I just want to see the ducks and the cows," Sophia Kaelin said.
There are several new things this year, including a food truck section and new entertainment spots. More than 260 retail vendors and 60-plus food vendors are scattered around the fairgrounds, including Joe Morland, who was serving a generational staple in the pineapple whip.
"I've been here 28 years ... I've seen kids; now they're adults, and they bring their kids," Morland said. "They say, 'Oh, you're still here.' So I'm always happy about it."
Lexi Ratterman, a spokesperson for the Kentucky State Fair, said around 600,000 people attended last year. This year's theme is, "Celebrating 120 Years, 120 Counties," and Ratterman said she hopes that number is surpassed.
"We're really just encouraging everyone from all walks of life, every corner of the state, to come out and enjoy and celebrate the commonwealth," Ratterman said.
Janice Kaelin said there's something for everybody and she plans to attend again before the Kentucky State Fair closes Sunday, Aug. 25
"All the counties have exhibits; it's amazing, and all ages have something to look at," Kaelin said.
