LEXINGTON, Ky. — Blue Grass Airport announced it has an economic impact of over $700 million, according to a study conducted by a national aviation consulting firm. According to a comprehensive economic impact study conducting by the Mead & Hunt firm, the Blue Grass Airport is responsible for 4,745 jobs with an annual payroll of $180 million and an overall annual economic output of $709 million based on 2023 data.
In addition to the economic benefits, the airport said the study underscores how the airport enhances the quality of life for residents by providing essential services, such as transportation for health care needs.
“We are thrilled to share the findings of this study, which highlights the crucial role Blue Grass Airport plays in driving economic growth for the Commonwealth,” said Eric Frankl, president and CEO at Blue Grass Airport. “We are proud of how the airport enhances the quality of life for individuals and businesses in the area by providing essential transportation services.”
According to a news release, the study used the Impact Analysis for Planning input-output model to estimate the airport’s economic impact. This model accounts for not only the direct economic impacts, but what are called “mulitplier impacts,” which result from money being re-spent and re-circulated within the economy. The study accounted for both the direct impacts and the multiplier impacts to calculate the total economic impact of the Blue Grass Airport in the region.
The airport noted some benefits beyond just the economic impact. They include aviation use for medical purposes by nearby hospitals and medical facilities, aviation career development and Honor Flights, which give military veterans complimentary trips to the memorials in Washington.
A comprehensive report of the study and information on three case studies can be found here.
The Blue Grass Airport in Lexington serves over 1.4 million passengers annually and has been providing commercial air services for 77 years.
