OWENSBORO, Ky. — A group of Kentuckians is attempting to break the pushup relay world record by doing as many as they can in four hours.
The group has been practicing for days on end in crazy workouts over the past eight weeks.
“Sometimes doing 500 pushups, then doing 1,500 pushups in a certain workout, with a certain amount of recovery," said Bob O'Brien, the team's coach.
But it’s not just about making their muscles look good. The team is attempting to break the pushup relay world record this Saturday, July 27.
“One person can be going at a time, just stacking them up," said member Blake Roberts.
They are given four hours to do as many pushups as they can.
“We’re trying to get 22,000 pushups," O'Brien said. "The world record is 19,130.”
That means each of the 10 athletes will have to get around 2,000 pushups each if they want to break the record, an average of 21 every 15 seconds.
The pain is unreal, said athlete Anthony Tate.
“It’s not like it’s going to hurt for a day or two," Tate said. "It could hurt for like three or four weeks. It could be a month.”
They said the mental toll it takes is taxing but embrace the challenge.
“I just love the challenge, being uncomfortable, getting yourself in that uncomfortable state and seeing what you’re made of," Roberts said.
The world record will be attempted Saturday, July 27 at 1 p.m. CDT at an event at Jungle Gym's in Owensboro, Kentucky.
