LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An event to surrender guns was held on Sunday, giving people the opportunity to turn in unwanted guns and remain anonymous.

What You Need To Know

  •  A Guns to Gardens event took place on Sunday for people to turn in unwanted guns

  •  The guns are cut with chop saws and then taken to a blacksmith to be made into gardening tools

  •  Volunteers feel safe-surrender events are important to reduce the number of guns in a community

Over 20 guns were turned in during the Guns to Gardens event. They were then cut by volunteers using chop saws.

After the event, the gun parts get taken to blacksmith Craig Kaviar to be made into gardening tools, art and jewelry.

There were nearly 20 homicides in Louisville last month, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Volunteers feel that safe-surrender events like this contribute to a safer city.

“We think this is a small step toward reducing the number of guns in the community, and therefore, reducing the violence,” said Eva Stimson with Guns to Gardens.

The Guns to Gardens event was the fourth one held in Louisville since the end of 2022. Over 70 guns have been surrendered throughout these events.
