LOUISVILLE, Ky. — National Donut Day is June 7 and a Louisville donut shop is getting the community involved to help celebrate.

With each mix, dunk, sprinkle and coffee blend, North Lime Coffee and Donuts work to create community.

“We are just a really big small town, almost. We know everyone. Everyone’s kind of a neighbor and we’re a part of this community,” said general manager and baker Kayla Hawkins.

Hawkins says it’s important to take care of their neighbors.

“What we do is we will take any leftovers that we have and donate them to some of the homeless shelters within the city. And any opportunity that we have to help someone in need makes us truly so happy,” she explained.

North Lime is always looking for ways to include the community. And this year for National Donut Day they are doing things a little differently. They are holding a donut contest, allowing submissions from customers in honor of the occasion.

People have the chance to pick and create the perfect donut to celebrate. 

“Pick a cake donut, which is what you see here, or our yeast donut, and then any sort of flavor from the flavor of the cake or the flavor of the icing and the toppings,” said Hawkins.

With over 250 submissions already, Hawkins says they want the public to put their donut creativity to the test.

“Some of the flavors we have: a strawberry margarita. The someone mentioned a sweet and salty, which I’m here for, but they’ve talked about doing pretzels and like Cheez-Its on it. I’m very excited,” said Hawkins.

She says the crazier the better; that is her expertise. 

“We’ve done a fried pickle donut, a sushi candy donut. We’ve done a cannoli donut. We’ve done pulled pork. You name it, we’ve got it. I tell anybody: You give me an idea and 48 hours, I can give you a donut,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins says she loves creating crazy fun flavors and now the customers can get in on the fun. The winner will be announced on May 28 and will receive a $100 gift card. The donut will be featured at all North Lime locations, which are in Louisville and Lexington.
