LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In honor of Louisville/Jefferson County's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, Mayor Craig Greenberg, D-Louisville, is recognizing May 19-25 as EMS Week, with the theme "Honoring our past. Forging our future."

“The theme of ‘Honoring our past. Forging our future.’ reminds us to acknowledge the foundational work of those bold first EMS workers while also striving to build and lead the EMS system we envision for our future,” Greenberg said. "On behalf of our residents and visitors, we thank the EMS professionals who are ready for any kind of emergency – seven days a week, 24 hours a day – whether or not that includes going to the hospital."

There are eight EMS providers in Louisville/Jefferson County, including Louisville Metro EMS, Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS, Fern Creek Fire & EMS, St. Matthews Fire & EMS, Jeffersontown Fire & EMS, Fairdale Fire Department, PRP Fire Department and Okolona Fire Department.

All eight agencies will launch a coordinated, months-long social media campaign during EMS Week, the mayor's office said, with the goal of raising awareness of the EMS profession and the services personnel provide.

The mayor's office added Louisville's Big Four Bridge will be lighted Monday, May 20 in honor of EMS Week. Daily themes include the following:

  • Sunday, May 19 – Health, Wellness and Resilience Day
  • Monday, May 20 – Education Day
  • Tuesday, May 21 – EMS Safety Day
  • Wednesday, May 22 – EMS for Children Day
  • Thursday, May 23 – Save-A-Life Day
  • Friday, May 24 – EMS Recognition Day
  • Saturday, May 25 – EMS Remembrance Day

National EMS Week began in 1974 under a proclamation from former President Gerald Ford calling on the U.S. to improve its emergency medical care while recognizing medical professionals and their work.
