Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, officers were conducting surveillance at South 3rd Street and West Kenton Avenue regarding an ongoing homicide investigation. Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said officers saw a homicide suspect from one of last week’s shootings. When officers approached, the suspect displayed a weapon and ran from detectives. Detectives then tackled him and began wrestling for the gun in his hand.
After multiple requests to release the gun, police said the suspect discharged the weapon before officers fired back, hitting the suspect once.
The 17-year-old Hispanic teen is being treated for life-threatening injuries at the University of Louisville Hospital. Police said they do not believe there is any further danger to the public stemming from the incident.
Anyone with information regarding the incident should call LMPD's anonymous tip line at 502-574-LMPD, police said. In accordance with its officer-involved shooting protocol, LMPD will release the video within 10 business days.
