  • Hundreds of families came out, playing games, eating snacks and collecting eggs

  • It was Florence Police Chief Tom Grau's last year overseeing the event before he retires after 29 years

In a burst of colors and laughter, hundreds of families gathered, ready for the Easter egg hunt. Among the masses was mother of two, Rachel Maucotel.

"We're all here to celebrate Easter, to have fun and get involved in the community," she said.

There were games, music, vendors and Florence Y'alls mascot Y’All Star on hand for photos. Mayor Julie Metzger Aubuchon and Florence Police Sgt. Chris Billiter were there handing out leis and candy before the hunt began.

“I think it's a great way to support families and support our police department and all the good work that they do," Metzger Aubuchon said. "We just love to give back to the community."

"This is a good chance for us to get out and meet all the kids in our community, get to know them and they get a chance to say hi to us," Billiter added.

The gates opened at 10 a.m., with three different hunts for age groups 3 and under, 4 to 7 and 8 to 12. Celebrating his ninth birthday was Jayden Caskey, who said he was there for just one thing: the candy.

Children ran across the field, scooping as many eggs as they could into their baskets ready to enjoy their treats. Maucotel said she hoped the children enjoyed connecting with each other.

“I feel like it's a way for children to have fun experiences and to learn about life," she said. "I mean, being able to get out in the community is so good for children, and it's so healthy for them.”
