BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Conservative nonprofit Turning Point USA will host Kyle Rittenhouse March 27 at Western Kentucky University (WKU).
Rittenhouse, who is from Illinois, made national headlines in Aug. 2020 when he killed two protesters and injured another during a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was later acquitted of all charges in 2021 after testifying he acted in self-defense. He was 17 at the time of the protests.
According to Turning Point USA, "The Rittenhouse Recap" will begin at 7 p.m., and Rittenhouse will speak about the "importance of the Second Amendment" and "the lies of BLM."
The nonprofit says its mission "is to identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote freedom" and has chapters at multiple universities across the U.S. It held a similar event Feb. 8 at East Tennessee State University. Rittenhouse is also set to speak March 20 at the University of Memphis prior to his Bowling Green appearance.
In a statement shared with the College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky's student newspaper, university spokesperson Jace Lux said the event is not affiliated with WKU.
"While the commitment to free speech will always remain a hallmark of the WKU experience and we will continue to allow our community members to invite guests to campus, that does not mean that the university supports, endorses or agrees with the views of those individuals," Lux said via the College Heights Herald.
Admission is free for both WKU students and the public.
