LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sending a little love with the click of a button, Norton Children's Hospital Foundation is collecting online cards to uplift patients for Valentine’s Day. Development coordinator Lena Iwu said these gifts and cards help bring brightness during tough times.

What You Need To Know

  • This marks the fourth year Norton Children's Hospital Foundation is collecting Valentine's cards for patients

  • More than 10,000 cards and 1,700 care packages were bought last year, with purchases coming from all over the U.S. and even Canada

  • The community can purchase packages, which include a stuffed animal, stickers and a card

  • In honor of American Heart Month, which is February, 10% of purchases will be donated to the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation to support patients and staff at Norton Children’s Heart Institute

“Nobody likes to spend the holidays in the hospital, but during Heart Month, we really try to celebrate our heart warriors and support our heart warriors," Iwu said.

Iwu said those interested can also purchase a care package. They include a card, stickers and a stuffed animal such as an octopus, a giraffe or Duncan, a facility dog who serves at Norton Children's Hospital.

She added the program holds extra meaning to her as three years ago, her daughter was in the cardiac intensive care unit on Valentine's Day.

“We received one of these valentines ... I just remember going through so much, but then having this small little surprise that we didn't know was coming, it really did just brighten our day," she said.

"You can make a small difference for children who are really struggling or who've really had a bad day ... you can bring that joy," Iwu said. "You can bring that happiness with just the click of a button.”

Both the Valentine's cards and the care packages are available on the hospital's website until Feb. 9. They will be delivered Valentine’s Day to kids at Norton Children’s Hospital, Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Norton Children’s Medical Center and Novak Center for Children’s Health.
