LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A church in Louisville is making sure that children in Jefferson County have a nice place to sleep. Volunteers at Middletown Christian Church helped put together 25 beds for students in Jefferson County Public Schools.
This is not a typical Sunday afternoon for 60-year-old Tammy Moriarty
“We have UofL Women’s tickets, so we would be getting ready for that. I’d be getting ready for the week grocery cleaning, whatever we need to do. My husband works for JCPS, and I work for JCPS. So you have no time during the week,” said Moriarty, Build-a-Bed volunteer.
She and many other volunteers spent their Sunday afternoon building beds for students at Jefferson County Public Schools with housing insecurities.
“25 of them are going to have beds probably tomorrow. If they don’t get them done tomorrow, then they’ll go the next day. So it goes straight from here to them, which is really amazing. A lot of times you do volunteer, which is all worthwhile, but. It doesn’t happen that week,” said Moriarty.
The Louisville resident has been volunteering for about seven years and she said it’s the best feeling in the world to help children in need.
“Your time is well spent. You never miss that time because this is better than all those things I was saying. This is way better. It’s a wonderful feeling because we work with these kids. I’ve known kids that did not have that. I actually turned in two names to Ben a few years ago,” she shared.
According to the Kentucky Department of Education, thousands of students experience homelessness every year and many more face housing insecurities.
“So it’s the holiday season, so I can’t think of a better way to go into the holiday season, honestly, than by a community coming together to care for a community,” said Ben Langley, specialist of community support services for Jefferson County Public Schools.
Moriarty said if you can help, you should help.
“Absolutely. Absolutely. If you don’t have to have any skill, you don’t have to have any background,” she said.
The beds will be distributed to students on Monday. All the materials were donated by the Middletown Christian Church.
