FRANKFORT, Ky. — Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman, D-Ky., announced she underwent a double mastectomy on Monday, Dec. 18, after findings during a routine physical.

In a statement, Coleman said, “With a significant family history of cancer, I made the decision to have a double mastectomy. I am happy to report that a successful surgery was performed today, and I expect to make a full recovery.”

She continued saying, “Serving as Kentucky’s Lieutenant Governor is the honor of my life. I am eternally grateful for my loving and supportive family who makes that possible…”

Shortly after her announcement, Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., released a statement of his own saying, “Britainy and I fully expect the Lieutenant Governor to make a full recovery. She is our friend and a critical part of Team Kentucky.”

Coleman urged Kentuckians to do their homework, calling herself, “Kentucky’s highest elected teacher” She gave everyone the assignment of scheduling preventative exams.

She added, “… hug your people a little tighter and be kind, because everyone is fighting a battle you may know nothing about.”

Coleman and Beshear were just sworn in for their second term on Dec. 12. 

Coleman is 41 years old.
