FRANKFORT, Ky. — After three terms in the Kentucky General Assembly, Rep. Danny Bentley, R-Russell, announced he will retire at the end of his current term.

The Republican lawmaker said he was ready to close the chapter of his life and begin another where he said he would spend more time with family and “tackling new challenges for our region.” 

A pharmacist from Russell, Bentley represents the 98th House District, which includes all of Greenup County and a portion of Boyd. He was first elected in 2016 and currently chairs the budget subcommittee on Health and Family Services. He also serves on the Appropriations and Revenue, Banking and Insurance, Health Services and Local Government committees.

Among his accomplishments, Bentley helped create the Rural Hospital Loan Program to help hospitals in counties with a population of less than 50,000. A Type 2 diabetic, he also helped pass legislation to cap the cost of a 30-day supply of insulin at $30.

“Rep. Bentley will be missed tremendously. He has been on the front lines of our efforts to improve public health, expand substance abuse recovery, and spur economic development and jobs. Danny’s dedicated his entire life to helping others and he will leave an incredible legacy,” House Speaker David Osborne, R-Prospect, said.

Bentley’s current term will end on Dec. 31, 2024. Until then, he will serve the district during the 2024 Regular Session and throughout the legislative interim.
