LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Fans of the "Pub Sub" now have a date to circle on their calendars. According to the Publix app, the first store in Kentucky will open Jan. 10, 2024.
The Florida-based grocery chain broke ground on the Terra Crossing Shopping Center, which is just off of Old Henry Road in Louisville on June 23, 2022. The 55,701-square-foot store features a drive-thru pharmacy and a liquor store. This is the first Publix Liquors located outside of Florida.
The company is building four stores in Kentucky, three in Louisville and one in Lexington at The Fountains of Palomar. All the stores will open in 2024.
When the third store was announced, Publix Director of Communications, Maria Brous said, “Publix provides premier customer service, along with a deep commitment to the communities in which we serve. We are excited for Kentuckians to begin experiencing the Publix difference as we continue to expand our footprint in the Bluegrass State.”
In September, Publix was named one of the 2023 Best Workplaces in Retail list by Fortune, ranking No. 6 of the 20 best large retail workplaces.
Even though the company’s stores haven’t opened in Kentucky, it has already become involved with the community. After the groundbreaking last year, company representatives went to the Dare to Care food bank and unloaded and sorted 40,000 pounds of produce donated by the company. Since 2021, Publix has been making biweekly produce donations to Dare to Care. The partnership has allowed the food bank to share over 775,000 pounds of produce with those in need. It is part of its Publix Serves program. Publix Serves started in 2015 and is one of many community outreach programs the grocery chain participates in.
