LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Daylight Saving Time is back and although you gain an hour of sleep, there are now some new hazards you should know.

The Louisville Fire Department shared some tips to keep you safe while we fall back.

What You Need To Know

  •  Kentucky is  falling back one hour on Saturday night for Daylight Saving Time

  • This is a great time to clean out your fire places and your furnaces

  •  Always be cautious while using a space heater

  • you can call 311  Louisville Fire can replace or replace your smoke detector

Captain Donovan Sims, starts with preparing for cold temperatures.

“Your furnaces, your fireplaces, you want to make sure those things are getting checked and cleaned out before you’re kicking them on. Take those precautions. Right? Don’t just flip on that furnace and start heating up your house,” said Sims.

As always, residents need to be careful if they are using space heaters.

“If you’re going to use space heaters, be cautious. You’re plugging those into an outlet by themselves. Don’t plug them into power strips connected with other sources,” said Sims.

Along with remembering how to safely use your space heater, it might be time to check your smoke detector.

“We recommend checking smoke alarms once a month. In order to check smoke alarms, take it off the ceiling. You’re going to press the button and hold. If you hear the beep it’s good, if not we recommend replacing your smoke alarm. If your smoke alarm is ten years or older, we also recommend replacing it,” said Brittany Leister with Louisville Fire Prevention.

If your alarm is faulty, you can call 311 and Louisville Fire can help replace and install smoke alarms at no charge. You can check with your area fire departments to see if they have options to help for those not living in Louisville.

“Just simple precautions are going to go a long way. And as always, we’re here for you, as Louisville Fire Service, as fire prevention,” said Sims.
