FRANKFORT, Ky. — The family of Brereton Jones announced the funeral arrangements for the former Kentucky governor.
On Monday, Sept. 25, Jones will lie in state in the rotunda of the Kentucky State Capitol from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitors can visit there from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church in Midway, Kentucky. The service will be followed by a private burial ceremony.
In a statement by his wife and children, the Jones family shared, “It was his love of horses that brought Brereton Jones to Kentucky, but it was the people of the Commonwealth that made his life so incredibly fulfilling.”
“Our family has lost its hero, our leader, our beloved ‘Pop,’” said the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Race Track Chaplaincy of America, Old Friends or Bluegrass Care Navigators.
The former governor died at his home on Sept. 18 after a lengthy illness. He was 84 years old. Jones served as Kentucky’s 58th governor from 1991 to 1995 and as lieutenant governor from 1987 to 1991. He and his wife founded Airdrie Stud in Midway, Kentucky, after his time as governor.
