LOUISVILLE, Ky. — September 11, 2001 was the deadliest attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor in 1941. Every year, Kentucky organizations dedicate time to honor victims and first responders lost in the attacks.
Memorial events in the commonwealth start this morning.
At 9 a.m., Jeffersontown Fire and EMS will honor first responders who lost their lives helping victims at the First Responders Remembrance Plaza.
The plaza contains elements from one of the original World Trade Center towers. It was unveiled in Kentucky last year.
In Sheperdsville, Active Heroes will hold a day of service.
Volunteers will spend the day improving the active hero retreat, a place dedicated to serving military families.
At 10 a.m. Louisville Metro Government will honor firefighters lost on 9/11 at the Louisville Fire Headquarters.
Over 300 firefighters were killed on the day of the attack, the deadliest day in the fire's history service.
In Lexington, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Police and Fire Memorial on Main Street followed by a reading of the names of the fallen firefighters.
The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Kroger Field at 7 p.m.
