LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Churchill Downs is familiar with taking bets on horse racing, but all that changes Thursday, Sept. 7.

The historic racetrack will accept in-person bets at its new Race & Sports Book beginning at 11 a.m.

To celebrate “opening day” of sports betting in Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., will place the first ceremonial wager at the track. The governor will be joined by Louisville mayor, Craig Greenberg, D-Louisville and area sports greats including basketball stars Darrell Griffith and Bobby Perry, trainer Dale Romans, NFL stars Will Wolford and Eric Wood.

Churchill’s Race & Sports Book is in the newly renovated Aristides Lounge on the second floor of the clubhouse. The space features a TV wall, including a 7’ x 24’ LED video screen and over a dozen 90” televisions. Fans will find 16 large-format TVs for sports and horse racing, 15 betting kiosks, seven horse betting kiosks, betting windows with tellers, a bar and seating for over 280 people.

The public will be allowed in to the sports book beginning at 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Bettors must be at least 18 years old to gamble.

Online sports betting begins in Kentucky Sept. 28.
