BURLINGTON, Ky. — The 2023 LWS Open at Idlewild took place in Burlington this weekend. It's one of the stops for the Disc Golf Pro Tour. Players came in from all over the world. But for Rebecca Cox, this stop on the tour was her hometown.
“It’s just so incredible to see one of my home courses that I’ve seen since I was 8 years old become such a big part of the tour,” Cox said.
Cox said she’s been playing almost two decades now. She began around the age of 8, and now she’s seeing a growth in the sport, with younger and younger players joining the game.
“Just to see the number of kids who are starting now even younger than I started and they get to play with plastic that’s so much more advanced than what I grew up with and it’s definitely growing exponentially,” Cox said.
Jason Kerl, tournament co-director, said he’s been playing for years and works with a lot of people playing in the greater Cincinnati area. He said he’s also seen a growth in the sport.
“I’ve been playing since the late 80s. Obviously, with the pandemic, everyone needed to get outside and find something to do. Disc golf is inexpensive,” Kerl said.
Players from this weekend’s stop are set to head on to Michigan next. Idlewild will become a space for the amateur side of this event on Aug. 18-21.
