LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A suspect was killed while attempting to carjack a Louisville Metro Police car and now Kentucky State Police are investigating what happened.
According to LMPD Interim Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel, the shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. in Louisville’s west end at 22nd and Griffiths streets.
Gwinn-Villaroel said LMPD fugitive unit officers were in the area looking for a wanted person. That’s when the suspect, not the person officers were searching for, attempted to carjack the police cruiser and police officers fired at the suspect.
LMPD says the person the fugitive unit was looking for turned themselves in to officers.
The interim chief said the officer tried to save the suspect’s life by administering aid at the scene. First responders transported the unidentified man to University of Louisville hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Gwinn-Villaroel said the officer who fired the gun is a 10-year veteran with the department.
This is a developing story. We will add more details when they become available.
