LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Cameron Hobbs is on his way to the big stage. He’s part of the national Broadway tour for Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
Hobbs has been performing in New York for nearly 12 years.
“I’ve done many contracts, I’ve done some Disney Cruise Line contracts, and then I did some national tours other than Moulin Rouge, and then in 2022, I made my Broadway Debut in Aladdin the Musical,” said Hobbs.
But before he took the main stage, he spent summers performing at the Iroquois Amphitheater, performing in musicals for what used to be called Music Theatre Louisville.
Hobbs is a native to the Louisville area and spent years training for the big stage. Not only was he learning about the professional world of theatre, he was learning about himself.
“I remember knowing I was gay from a very young age and knowing that it was not accepted by all. It was not widely accepted in that area. So, I remember my mom being very accepting of me,” Hobbs recalled.
He has seen Louisville become a more accepting and loving city right before his eyes.
“When I was young and growing up as a gay boy in small town Indiana and Kentucky, I just didn’t realize that I wasn’t alone,” Hobbs said. “And I remember a couple of people telling me, ‘We would never choose this life for you because we know it’s going to be a difficult life.’ And now, being where I am today, I would be like, ‘I would definitely choose this life. I would definitely choose the life that I’m living.’”
Hobbs and his cast encourage others to embrace who they are.
“The whole point of the show is to talk about truth, beauty, freedom and love. I think that’s exactly what we do in Pride month. I think that’s what the LGBTQ community does. We celebrate truth, beauty, freedom and love,” said Hobbs.
The Moulin Rouge! The Musical tour continues through April 2024.
