LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Summer is in full swing here in the Bluegrass State, and Kentuckians are enjoying sunny days and catching rays. Hundreds came out to enjoy Splashfest at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park Saturday.
Wesport Middle School seventh grader Braxton Dunn is making a splash. Dunn is a regular jumper on the diving board. He spent his Saturday perfecting his dive.
“At first, it’s kind of scary. And it’s kind of like very in your chest. When you hit the water, it hurts sometimes, but it’s normally fine,” said Dunn.
Dunn isn’t the only one enjoying Splashfest at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
“Well, today they have free admission, so the whole fam was able to get together and spend some time together and normally no other pools are open,” said 21-year-old Louisville resident Natalie Loper.
Currently, the city of Louisville only has two outdoor public pools open for summer. Several pools didn’t open due to much needed renovations. However, there are over 30 splash pads available for residents.
“Kentucky State Parks is very committed to having this pool up and running and serving the community,” said Chairman of Tom Sawyer State Park Foundation Carol Timmons.
The annual tradition allows for free beach balls, free admission to the pool and even chances to win prizes.
“It’s a wonderful place to be and I hope will come out and visit E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park if they haven’t done so because it’s a wonderful place in our community,” said Timmons.
Kentucky residents are laying on the sun-screen and diving in for a fun filled afternoon.
“Yep, coming right back. Best place ever,” said Dunn. He looks forward to perfecting his dive this summer.
