Inside the Louisville neighborhood shop Trunk and Hutch, Derby apparel is wall to wall.

“More pink for Oaks,” said Tara Scanlan, who is the co-owner of Trunk and Hutch. It’s a boutique shop she and her partner Kira opened in the summer of 2020.

“We have noticed over the past three years as we’re posting on Instagram, that if Kira and I are in the post for whatever reason, it gets a lot likes,” Scanlan said.

Posting on social media has elevated the shop drawing in people outside of their zip code to check out local designers. Scanlan said it’s a familiar face that helps audiences because the excitement for Derby sits on one thing.

“Fashion. I love going to the Derby. I love it. It is fun to go, you know, to go watch and look at the other ladies and hats and it’s just fun. It’s a lot of fun, but fashion was a big part of it,” Scanlan said.

The Kentucky native knows a thing or two about Derby fashion. She has attended the Derby for over two decades.

“I have been going to Derby for about 25 years with my husband and we go with a group of friends and it’s just it’s just the excitement,” Scanlan said. “It’s when you walk in and you hear and see the people. You walk in and get a mint julep. You get settled into your box or just walk around and it’s just it’s just every year it gets better. I still love going and I don’t mind crowds.”

And don’t forget men’s apparel.

“We do have some socks and bow ties,” Scanlan said.

For two years now, the store has hosted an event selling donated hats and fascinators that benefit the Backside Learning Center.
